I have seen a lot of great threads on detailing passenger car interiors, but I didn't realize how many of them have riveted solder pads and wires attached to the bottoms of the inserts.

Are you removing all of that first before you paint, etc.  I am not crazy about that idea.

Thanks,

John

I just recently did a repaint and I removed the plastic trucks.

  1. The center pickups pop out of the truck by prying one of the side plates out slightly.
  2. Heat up the solder on the center pickup with a soldering iron and the lamp wire will lift out of the solder.
  3. I removed my rivets with a Dremil tool by grinding the foot of the rivet off. Make sure to use water to cool the rivet every few seconds while grinding. If not, the Rivet will get hot and it will melt the plastic of the body.

For reassembly:

  1. I replaced the Rivets with #6 machine screws and locknuts. This allowed me to tighten the nut to the truck and back off 1/4 a turn to allow the truck to pivot but the locknut will stay put.
  2. To solder your leads back on: tin the wire, lay the wire on the old solder, and heat the solder again the wire will sink into the solder and your lights will be reconnected.
