I recently purchased a blue Lionel Lines Commodore Vanderbilt engine/tender. Very nice loco, see photo attached. Wondering if anyone knows the correct passenger cars that go with this? To my knowledge I don't think Lionel produced any blue passenger cars specifically for this set, but maybe there are older blue cars that could match? Thanks!

I don't believe there were any,,for the blue or red,,,,,i really love that ,,,,,but it has been lots bucks in the past,,,,,,,enjoy,,,,,,,,,oh mth,,,,,,,,!!!!!!!
MWAX516,
Perhaps the remake of the Blue Comet prewar passenger cars would look great with it. I have the Red Hudson, 6-28012, and the re-issued red Rail Chief cars from the 1990s, 6-51201 (for the detailed NYC Hudson) look very much in place and elegant behind the red Vanderbilt Hudson. I have been interested, thinking, of acquiring the blue version, also, as they are great engines. Some may be in opinion of them being too out-of-date and passe', but great engines, none the less.

Thanks Jesse! I had thought about the blue comet passenger cars but wasn't positive it would be a match. I will look into that further. Mine is mainly for display at the moment, but plan to run it in the near future. Glad to hear your review of the engine.
I also came across the Lionel 21" Aluminum Great Northern Big Sky Blue Passenger cars. Would those be an appropriate match as well? Thanks
I think MTH made them for lionel? look in MTH catalog. I have the original Vanderbilt Prewar from my dad.
Keep in mind though that the prewar tinplate Blue Comet cars have the old box couplers, not the knuckle couplers on the Hudsons.
Personally, the Santa Fe Blue Goose would fit right in with the engine. It's a shame generic Lionel Lines cars aren't available in different colors.
For sure...the Santa Fe Blue Goose is a very nice car, but the mismatch in names would be a bit frustrating! lol
The blue CV is one my favorite locos. No matching blue or red pass cars for these specific CVs were ever made by Lionel. What I run behind the blue CV is the 19165 Lionel Lines extruded aluminum pass cars from 1996, just need to change the Santa Fe drumhead on the observation car. Too bad Lionel didn't do matching cars in aluminum/matching paint, as that would be one great looking train.

Very nice Ed!
Ed H,
You are absolutely correct there are really no matching Passenger Cars for either of the CV Engines & Tenders, and that is why I do not own either the Blue or the Red. If Lionel or MTH would make some matching Tin Plate Passenger rolling stock, I would own the CV, until they do I will keep watching. IMO the CV is not a work Train type Engine.

i'm abit confused,,,,i only have two standard gauge sets from lionel,,,,so these cv,,,,(I don't have the book) are they just rail sounds?,,,,,i don't see any run, program switches anywhere,,,,,it has a place in the tender for a 9v battery,,,,i has sounds and bell and whistle ,,,when I run it, but no tower com or chatter,,,,thanks for your help

texastrain,,,how do you couple the cars to the tender,,,,,i thought the headend had a drawbar on it,,??
Terry,
The Rail Chief cars came with a knuckle coupler that slips on and off the front car. I recommend holding onto it for dear life, because their IS NOT REPLACEMENT AVAILABLE. I should know. So, I had to make one of my own with junk parts.
well I did somemore fact finding on my last post,,,,,and followed the directions,,,,on the cab 1 forgot I had to hit aux 1 ,,,,now all is fine,,,,and they say men don't read directions,,,,ha
This is a fun post. I did not know that these engines where ever built, or forgot is more like it. In any case they look great and I think Terry's car picks above make for two beautiful trains.
Going for the blue comet set to match my blue CV. Got my hands on a rare blue comet diner car. Slightly different color variation but looking great!

mwax, looks nice, but those cars in front of it look shape with either your blue or even with the red one,,,,who made those shinny bad boys?
The cars in front are brand new 15" K-line aluminum empire state express cars. Yes they would look equally as good with the blue or red CV. Time to add more shelves...

I Have a re CV. Am thinking about the red Rail Chief cars. Would you please take a photo of the CV and one of the cars together and send me? So I can see how close the red colors are. Thank you.
