Penn Central N6A construction

I have a Russ Briggs kit or two.  If you would like to borrow one to see what he did you are more than welcome.

I shudder when I think of making things out of plastic.  How sharp do your knives have to be?

I did not know Briggs made cabooses.  The PRR N6 series are my favorites.

Generally the cabins are .040” styrene and the frames are .060”. Cabooses such as this will also incorporate a piece of sheet brass within the frame for strength. Those with a full length cabin do not require the brass.

Here are some photos of the almost finished cabins. I’ve added the roof raised panels, roof ribs and the old roofwalk supports. I’m going to add a few bent studs/bolts where the roof walks were removed. There is a fine set of rivets on the edge of the roof too, I highlighted them with pencil. They are simple strips of .010” styrene with pounce wheel impressed rivets. The underframe is being constructed at the same time while glue dries on other projects.

Beautiful modeling work of a unique prototype.  They were class N9 or N9E on the prototype, not N6.  Class N6 was a wooden PRR standard for many years, built with both center and offset cupola variations.

I have 3 cabeese created by Brother Love. Nicest pieces I own. Superb craftsmanship. Actually....works of art. Love 'em!

Bill, You are correct to a point. There was a class of PRR wooden cabins that was N6. These NYC and PC transfer cabooses were also classed as N6A lot number 121 (18006 thru 18194)  to replace the ageing wooden cabins per a union agreement. These were built by Despatch shops using old boxcar underframes and constructed in 1966 and 1967.  Penn Central  built the N9 class lot 152 (18195 thru 18354) in 1968.  Doug

Being more of a red team member than green team, I forgot about Despatch Shops.

The handrails begin. I made a jig for soldering and listening to classical music while working on them preserves sanity.

Glad you were not listening to heavy metal! No telling how those handrails would turn out!  Doug

I do my finest modeling while rocking to some metal.  

One down, 4 to go.

It is beautiful work.

I keep hoping he gets some kind of strange urge to build N&W stock cars someday. Probably not going to happen.

I ordered the plans for the cars from NWHS but haven’t had the courage to start them yet. BTW, even their plans are beautiful.
