Hello,

I've been trying to fix a postwar Lionel 2321 that had a bad battery leak, requiring a fuel tank replacement. The issue I'm having is that the E unit is arcing between the fingers and the drum, and constantly cycling directions until it stalls. The lights sometimes lose power while the motors still spin. I've replaced both sets of fingers and the drum, and cleaned the wheels multiple times. It was doing this before replacing those parts, which were in very poor shape. The only other ideas I have are either there isn't a good ground, or the solenoid is no good. Any help is greatly appreciated, since this project has been about 6 months in the making.

I’d agree with Bill, …..the e unit is grounded to the frame, but the frame only gets ground from resting on the trucks. If you had that much corrosion, to be sure it’s elsewhere,…..I’ve had them be stubborn like this, and adding a ground wire from the truck straight to the e unit frame ( via the mounting screw ) solved odd issues every time ….
