Hi!.  I just spent the weekend cleaning up and restoring a 2037 loco with a 2026w tender.  The engine runs great, however the tender's whistle only produces a "whistle" sound when the throttle is at or near full power.  Anything less, the armature spins but not fast enough to produce the desired sound.  I checked all the connections between th motor, rollers and relay.  I have thoroughly cleaned the insides of the motor and replaced the brushes with new ones.  After lubricating the bottom of the armature shafter near the impeller, I notice a significant improvement of the shaft rotating freely by hand.  But this seems to have no affect on the performance of the motor when activated electronically.  Is this typical of the 6026W's or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for your helpful suggestions!

Greg

I’m not sure I can help but I do know that not all modern transformers are compatible with post-war whistles so the first question someone else will want answered is “What transformer are you using?”  The second question will probably be “Do your other postwar whistle tenders and diesel horns work well with that transformer?”

If the bearings were very dry, they may need a second application of oil.

Did you change the brush springs?  I had bad luck with a replacement set that put too much pressure on the armature, and when I went back to the original springs, all was well.

I have yet to see replacement coil type brush springs (or any replacement coil type springs) that have the correct length or tension. I always re-use the original brush springs if they are in good condition. (clean them first).

I wonder why the parts guys can't source the correct springs.
