So, I've got a set of Lionel F Units. The Nose decals are gone, and I have new water decals, Solvaset etc. But where the old decals were there is some sticky adhesive type substance on the nose. What's the best way to remove this type of adhesive without damaging the paint?

Is it decal adhesive or some kind of glue? MicroSol will remove old decal residue (give it time to soften it). if it's stronger than that, Goo Gone should get it off, but try that first in an area that will be covered by the new decal,

It's some kind of glue or adhesive. Like the previous owner may have tried to "re-glue" a water decal. I can put my finger on it and its sticky, and leaves a faint fingerprint. It's a glue like substance.
Go for the Goo-Gone. Sometimes when I've removed old F3 decals, I've ended up using my fingernails to scrape off persistent spots. If paint gets removed a bit, I touch up the spots with red paint (it's covered with the decal eventually and isn't seen). Try the GG....it's made for that kind of thing. I've never had it effect paint, but you never know. So....like I said, try it first in a non-essential area.

Pure mineral spirits will usually remove adhesive. Don't know what it would do to the paint.
