I've searched hi and low and can't see a definitive answer - can a standard operating coupler like on the front of the F3 be added to the rear, or swapped so I can run an A-Unit only?

Not really - just use the uncoupling action of the connected car instead or run A-*-A
You cannot swap it with anything because of the way it was engineered. With some work and engineering of your own you, likely, could make parts to attach a functioning coupler. Also note that the rear truck on the F3 has no provision for a shoe to activate a coil coupler.
Unless you are **** bent on having a function coupler, BMORAN4’s suggestion is the way to go.
The one thing you can do is swap-out the rear truck-frame for one from a GP7/9 after first cutting away the pilot and steps. It makes for a very wide gap between the engine and first car though. The cut-down truck-frame looks like this (GP7/9 coupler not yet re-installed):

To me that was Lionel biggest flaw, Fixed couplers. but I'm not for modification of postwar engines.
Hmm... I guess I'll use the coupler on the first car for the time being - not really wanting to slice and dice a beautiful engine.. I'm up for revert-able mods..
The reason I asked - is because I snagged a NYC #2344 F3 on ebay. I just love these early F3's.. runs great - just got it in the mail today. These just scream "Lionel Train Set" to me!
