I'm picking up this Postwar set later this week but I'm curious as to whether anybody knows what exactly it might be? It was given to the current owner in the 1970s so its origins are unknown prior to that. I've not found a set that matches the components in my reference books. That said, the price is right and I like the combination of cars and locomotive so I'm grabbing it either way. Just curious as to whether it matches anything Lionel cataloged (or sold as an uncatalogued item for that matter) or if it's a combination of things. If the latter, is there a set that matches the combination of cars with a different locomotive?

check on line post war lionel library they have a list of sets, that might help you. good luck
Checking my Doyle book of train sets the 2065 engine shows up in the following sets:
Sets 1515, 1516,1519,1521 Year-1954
Sets 1537,1538,1541 Year-1955
Sets 1561 & 1565 Year-1956
Unless I missed something(Which can very well happen), the cars shown in the photos don't match up with the cars that came with the sets.

In 1956 Lionel came out with set # 1561WS or 710 with Locomotive 2065, 6026W tender ,6562-25 red gondola with red canisters, and a red 6257 SP-type caboose. The other cars pictured were not in this set. Also included in this set were a 3424 Wabash operating brakeman, 6430 flat car with vans and 6262 flat car with wheels. Set came with a 1053 60-watt transformer,6019 Remote Control Track, 8 027 curve track and 3 027 straight track.
Just checked my Greenberg's guide to Lionel trains, they have the 2065 but cars don't match up, maybe Lionel made it uncataloged, Good Luck
Is it possible that Lionel made this set for Sears, Montgomery Ward, or another department store chain back in the 1950s?
Finally got back around to doing a bit of research this evening. It looks like it's likely a 1555WS set that had the B&O boxcar traded out for the NH one and a 2065 substituted for the 2018 2-6-4. Not sure if this was done at the store when the set was new, or later on by the original owner. Regardless, I think it makes a nice looking outfit and the 2065 is a great locomotive so I'm looking forward to adding it to the collection.
