Any input on this? I have an MTH steam engine upside down in a maintenance cradle, using an MTH z controller I have a power lead to the engines pickup roller assembly and a common lead to the tenders frame, however the wheels will not turn but I get sounds from the tender, any ideas on this? This all worked about 1 month ago.

Run the power lead to the locomotive, the tender may not be grounded to the electronic package. It should be, but that sounds like the issue. Did you try measuring the resistance between the tender frame and the locomotive frame?
Hi Gunnrunnerjohn, the power is going to the engine and the common to the tender's frame and also tried the common to the tenders wheel rod. I had this same setup a month ago wit no issues. No, I did not measure the resistance.

The reason I ask is the newer PS/2 that have the 3/2 rail option do some funny things with the wheels and the frame ground. I have a 2-10-4 on the bench now, and the ground lead from the locomotive does not connect to the frame, only to the wheels on the right side. The tender chassis has no ground at all.
Ok found the problem, somehow the PS/3 engine possibly got into neutral mode, I placed the engine and tender back on the track and with the DCS remote did a factory reset, I then placed the engine/tender back on the cradle with the transformer leads and now the engine wheels started moving. Thanks very much gunrunnerjohn for your input.
By the way, when this issue was occurring, I had the common lead on the tenders wheel which I received sounds however now and the issue has been resolved, i can connect the common to the tenders frame.
It would have helped to know this was a PS/3 locomotive up front.
