A friend has been wanting to do this for a while they have finally gathered enough double stacks. A test for the big run this Sunday.

Gulp....WOW !!!
How many cars is that to make a scale mile? I figure about 80?
Most impressive!

I'll be there this Sunday to see what his final calculations came out to be.
So that's roughly 147 feet long?
WOW!
I noticed the foliage moving in the background...so what's a 15 mph wind converted to O-scale???
Straight Sick!

I'm figuring a scale mile is 110 feet (5280 divided by 48 = 110). I figure at 60 feet per car that ought to be 80-90 cars.
this ought to be something to see, regardless of length.
110' is a scale mile in 'O'. Unless there was an extreme stringlining hazard on that layout, it shouldn't need that many locos to pull such a train. The head-end consist should have been enough.

Wow awesome
THANKS, ALEX
The head-end consist should have been enough.
True, but being a model train layout, especially being outdoors the trackwork is not always perfect and I believe his thought is to just break up the long consist. His layout loosely replicates the Tehachapi Loop on one end and we have had an issue with some rolling stock being pulled off. That side is going to be a sight.
so what's a 15 mph wind converted to O-scale???
In a 1/48 scale world probably gale forces winds I imagine.
Very neat! I've pulled 43 cars with two MTH Genesis locomotives, one at the head and one in the middle. I think for a "mile" long train, you could get away with three or maybe four at the most. Of course, the more locomotives you have, the less load on the couplers, which was the stumbling block for my run.
Roman, good luck. Take video or pictures for us........
May the Railroad Gods be with you. Don
4X15 mph winds=60 mph. Yikes
That is pretty impressive. Just about 10 thousand dollars of train if I figure it right.
There sure were a lot of expensive locomotives pulling and pushing on that consist!
Yes, very expensive. My contribution is a paltry 4 husky stacks.
BTW, our host Ken Kelly who has had his prewar layout & collection feature in CTT has several open houses for many groups during the summer. If anyone is visiting the beautiful Central Coast of CA during summer let me know I can see if one of his run days works for a visit.
That's awesome. I Love It. Good Luck.
Just super glue the couplers if you have to.
Going back to the video now...
Incredible!!!!!!
Peter
Wow, Thats great, only in LA!
Im so glad that there is members that are wanting to run O scale outside! I have been wanting to do this for quite some time. Thanks for posting the video's!
I apologize if you have already said this but, is this a perminent outdoor layout? What kind of track is that? It looks like Atlas, is it?
Very nice! Are all those stacks Lionel cars, are is there some MTH cars mixed in?
Roman,
Thanks for sharing a really wonderful video. You can never have too many model locomotives and freight cars.
It is a permanent layout he has in his backyard (since we in earthquake land don't have basements we have to take over our yards) with Atlas track & switches The base is redwood he cut and shaped. A brand new extension with a staging yard was built last year. More videos can be seen in the link below I borrowed from the outdoor layout thread.

They are all Lionel stacks, 50 of them being supplied by one person.

One wonders about the train budget of the guy that is supplying 50 cars!
Roman:
Impressive. I agree with breaking up the consist as it will prevent string-lining on curves with a train that long (learned that one the hard way with a 50-footer.)
Can you put the layout owner in touch with me off-list (e-mail address below)? I had some technical questions to ask him regarding his layout as I'd like to do something similar.
Thanks.
Matt, I'll forward his info. You need to come on up sometime to check out and run some choo choo's.
Roman, how about some technical data used to run all that. Volt's, amps, etc.
Very nice!
It is also a $10,000 traction tire puller-offer

John, I believe Ben - Blueline4c, has run a consist with a 100 Ballantine reefers at the NJ Highrailers. I've posted a youtube video of my 2343 pulling 76 cars.
Wow now that is my kind of train! I think I counted about 61 husky stacks and a schnabel, two definately looked like MTH, they rode higher and didn't the the same crispness as Lionel. I've done some thing similar but on a smaller scale, at the time I had only about 26 Lionel and two sets of gundersen with 3 lead, 1 center and 1 tail ES44DC, but in 2 rail O scale, yep had to convert all the Lionel.
I've added a few more intermodal cars since the but the tracouplers too heavy.
Converted with NWSL steel wheels and Kadee.
how about some technical data used to run all that. Volt's, amps, etc.
Ken runs 2 main lines controlled by 2 TPC400's with 2 180 bricks on each with TMCC & Legacy. One line is command only and the other setup for conventional. A few frequent runners with P2 engines are trying to convince him to add DCS. He's added an external antenna to help with the Legacy signal. I know he'll take more video and I'll ask him take something on the Tehachapi side.
Looks great! Curious what is the loco power MTH Lionel?? or a mix??
thanks for posting link looks great.
I was going to try something like this at a train meet once, was going to do loops back and forth for one really long track then run lots of freight cars with locos throughout. They did not have enough room for me to set up so I had to do 3 loops of track trains nose to tail on 3 loops had DCS and used the all button to run all engines same speed, you should here a bunch of MTH locos all blowing horn at same time.
Hoping to go back another year and have enough space for one really long track and huge fleet of cars with locos!

I need to have more track to get past around 60 cars.

75 in the beginning then I add some more as it goes
I love long trains!! The video was fantastic...impressive! I don't have a video, but visitors to my layout can tell you that long trains are a common site on the "Twin Lakes Central". Most recently I ran an intermodal with nearly every car double stacked...a mix of K-Line, Lionel, and a couple MTH...a total of 76 intermodal cars with 4 power units on the front and a dummy unit on the rear. I have more stacks but the folks in the city were complaining that all of the street crossings were being blocked!!
Thanks,
Alan
kj356, it's all Lionel. A mix of the recent SD70Ace's and AC6000's. (not all supplied by one person! )
Roman, recognized Ken's place. There have been a number of long, long trains run there for sure. He is a great host. My Grandson Gavin, after a lesson from Ken, has run trains on the layout simply to demonstrate that a 5 year old can operate the systems.
GOOD LUCK.
