Hi Everyone,

I started collecting prewar model trains about two years ago.  Because of this I have no real background to draw upon when questions come up so typically will turn to books or forums to get answers.

One area that I require some clarification on is the 1940-1941 Lionel boxcars and reefers.

One book that I have, the first book that I bought actually was titled "The Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains" by David Doyle

In this book he refers to an 814 Boxcar in orange with a brown roof and rubber-stamping (I know that in this era may have been heat-stamping) but did this car ever exist?  I know it was available as a 2814.  The second question is regarding the 2814R refrigerator car which he states was produced in white with brown roof and nickel plates.  It did exist as an 814.

Again I would like to know if this car ever existed?

Thanks to anyone that can shed some light on this.

David

There's lots of folks over in the tinplate section that have vast knowledge in this area. I'm a prewar collector myself, and I do know that in the years leading up to the war Lionel was trying a lot of different things regarding lettering and numbering, often there will be multiple methods within the same production year. So there are a lot of super rare examples there.
