When, I was 7 years old my parents took me to Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, Ca. When I walked in and saw these fabulous standard gauge trains (two of them would run around the room three times if you put a dime in the coin box), that was the END of the O gauge right then and there!! Evan did not have any trains to sell, but he directed me to Herb Morley who had just bought a huge collection from Frank Cox in San Diego. Imagine, he mortgaged his house for $10,000 and ended up with Brown & Green State sets, National Limited, Prosperity Special, Olympian, Boucher Blue Comet and about 20 Lionel Trolley's!!! My first Standard Gauge set was a Lionel 390E + 332,337 and 341 plus track and a model K transformer for $35.00!!!!! He had about eight 408E's  sitting in a glass display cabinet (like you see in department stores) set in diagonally and he explained to us that they each had TWO Motors! However, they were $45 each, and that was a little steep for us at the time! lol

So, maybe two million dollars and 50+ years later, to paraphrase from Laurel & Hardy: "Here's another fine mess I've gotten MYSELF into!"

These photos were taken in 2013 when I had part of my collection on display at the Cal-Stewart meet in Los Angeles. EVERYTHING you see was in like new or better condition, and most with their original boxes!

Dr. Martin, The photos are wonderful, thank you. Do you know of any additional written histories or recollections of the train shop in Knott's Berry Farm?

I visited with my parents many, many times in the 50's and 60's and it is such a part of me.  It was so unlike it's larger neighbor in Anaheim. It really connected with me.

Thank you again.

John

Thank you for posting these very old and very interesting pictures of a train shop. I love looking at pictures of all train shops. You never know what you might see. You could see new trains or maybe some post war used trains. Pictures of engines, freight and passenger cars and all different kinds of accessories. Some pictures may even show store layouts. Hopefully, there will be pictures of customers purchasing something to take home to be enjoyed.

I visited Knotts Berry Farm in 1990 with my family and grandmother, she visited just a month before her death and we went to KBF, Disneyland, Sea World San Diego and a San Diego Padre's game, those memories have been very special, they were the only time she was visiting us away from her home of 60 years, and my sons remember her vividly. Sadly, there was no train store at the time of our visit, much like the demise of the train store here at McCormick Stillman Park, it is missed.

It was a great train store.  The train shop was one of the first things I visited when I went to Knott's Berry Farm.  I was sad to see it go. Another nice train shop was at Hobby City just a few blocks from Knott's. It is gone as well.  I still have the B & W train shop post cards and this little HO gem from Athearn. Some day I would like to customize this car in O scale.

As a 10 year old I visited Knotts in the late 50's on a trip to California with my parents.  I do not recall the train shop.  Either I just missed it or it had closed by then. Do recall riding the train though.

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY the places I do remember are Madison Hardware, Julies Toys on 23rd street and a train shop on Coney Island Ave that I d not recall the name of. I think that shop was called Fix All Appliance Shop.

I also have many great memories at Knott's. Between family dinners at the Chicken Restaurant and egg salad picnic lunches while watching the trolleys going by in the parking lot we went there many times. Many of those trips didn't even include going into the park itself. During one of our last trips there, our family road on their Galloping Goose. Not the same now as it once was, but still better than most! Knott's train cars were available in Standard Gauge too.IMG_20171031_211047

I used to go all the time. When parking was free, we’d cruise and hang out in the lot.
