Checking the 4 pin mating tether socket to mounting PCB solder joints. They are known to get cracked from the tether being plugged in and out or jerked on.

Part number 110 in the below drawing

Again, could be as simple as reflowing (heating the solder joints with a soldering iron and adding a bit of fresh solder).

This is an example version that had contact springs but the 4 pins from the socket mounted below can crack the solder joints and or rip the thin copper trace causing an intermittent open circuit. You can just move the wires directly to being soldered to the pins. Pro tip- Yellow and White/Blue? wires are the motor wires. Red/Orange will be 3rd rail power, black will be frame ground. Some also pick up frame ground from the screws mounting the PCB.

Remove the boiler shell so you can see the tether in the locomotive. Plug the tender tether in a wiggle it back and forth. I bet the pins on the boiler side move. Leave the tender tether plugged in and touch the tip of a hot soldering iron to each pin to reflow the solder. It'll tighten the pins back up for good electrical contact. Boom, problem solved.
