Made some progress today on my 4x7 fold-away Lionel layout. First was a trip to Indianapolis to swap that Weaver NS GP38-2 that hadn't sold yet along with a couple old Marklin posters for what comes in that large orange Lionel box. I also stopped at Lowes and picked up green paint. This picture is after the 1st coat has dried. Getting closer to running trains!

Last pic tonight. Do not have the $$ for the remaining track to complete the plan right now. Only got the ZW thru swapping some stuff for it. He didn't have any track unfortunatly. If anybody wants to send me a good used Lionel track present for Christmas, it would be greatly appreciated. I need eight 031curved sections and nine straight sections. I can custom cut the short sections I need from them. Was hoping my 2 rail stuff would sell by today, but no luck yet. Mike

Do you have a pic in the up position. That looks interesting to me, as I don,t have much room either.
no pic in the shut position yet, haven't closed it since I started on the track. Only the ZW is fastened down. I am hoping someone comes thru with some track so I can fasten it down. Mike
Did you design and build the mechanism to fold up and down?
Really looks like a great idea. Good job.
my track is all 027 or 036 FasTrack
It has 4 fence gate hinges, 2 are installed, will install 2 more once I am able to shut it again. Has 2 latches, one on each side, to keep it closed once its shut.
sent you a e-mail
I like your design very much. It's quite similar to a layout my son and I made for his kids, and it has worked well. As they are young, he installed a white erase board underneath, so they can draw on that when the table is up (and boy, they have).
Track on the way hopefully you can get the other 6 pieces of straight you need soon
That's awesome, Bill.
Bill is hooking me up with enough to atleast complete the outer loop and most of the inner, short a few pieces of straight. I used to have some old partial sections of straight, but I cannot find them. Thanks again Bill. Mike
Got the care package and started on the track last night. With the outer loop build to plan, I have a fouling issue with being able to shut the table. Lionel turnouts have that extension of the motor plate that has the Lionel name on it. It basicly goes to the edge of the layout on the front and back. I need to maintain 3/4 inch clearance so the table can shut against the frame. If I eliminate the rear crossover, the clearance issue is fixed but I loose the ablity to cross back over going forwards. I could notch the wall frame in 2 places to allow that part of the turnout to recess into the frame when the table is closed. Definatly have to keep 2 train operation, I have a ZW now! Pondering options right now. Still need more straight track to complete the inner loop. Merry Christmas Mike
New pic, train is running now on the outer loop. The inner loop isnt complete yet. Nothing is fastened down yet. By shifting the inner loop back towards the rear of the layout, I am able to put a full straight between the pair of 072 turnouts. This lets me put the station between the 2 loops so it serves both lines. I think this will work once scenery is done. Mike
