Go to the MTH web site for Parts/Service and search for your locomotive. If there is a complimentary sound set for that engine you will find it there. While you can download other files into the engine there is no guarantee that these files will work properly. The files are not just sound files. They include code to run the locomotive.
You need to match a PS-2 5V to a 5V sound file, or 3V to 3V. As Chuck said, matching to engine type is helpful so that speed is true and specific features such as firebox glow or number boards match up. G
Being they have been around for a while, I'm surprised someone hasn't taken the time to make a list of which files work well in which locomotives. Something like that would be helpful to the community for reasons like this.
