What is a proto sounds upgrade kit and what board or boards does it upgrade? Is it a stand alone unit? I see them for sale time to time but don't seem to be able to find any instruction or installation manuals. One I saw was a MTH PE-407 Alco-5 Diesel Proto Sounds upgrade kit.

It is call a ps3 or proto 3 steam or diesel kit, kit contains the ps 3 electronics to upgrade an old proto 1 engine or install in any engine that used a dc can motor . the steam or diesel kits cost $199.95 plus $18.00 shipping as mth only used fedex! if you join there member ship club you can buy kit for$169.00 plus shipping membership I believe is $50.00 depending if you get railking or premier membership! the kit gives you all the wire harness lights etc n speaker to install your self or have someone asc tech install for you!

Both the Steam and Diesel upgrade kits have instruction manuals inside them.

I am familiar with the PS3 upgrade kits. This is a much older board and a speaker. Looks sort of like part of a PS1 set up. Might it mount to an early MTH/QSI reverse board? Ebay auction # 333467381941 if you would like to look at it.
Of all the things I wouldn’t buy on the auction site, an upgrade kit is top of the list. Just follow the posts on bad boards, board fixes etc. if your still looking at a particular buy, screen shot and post the pic. I’m sure someone will identify the vintage.

The site is for a diesel and I cannot find one for a steam loco on the mth site. Appreciate any insite on the matter. Jim
If you're just looking for a sound board, I'd consider the ERR products from 3rd Rail. You get a currently supported sound system and complete installation instructions. The bonus is the board is much smaller than the old MTH board you're referencing.
