PS-2 Engine quits in the middle of operation!

Have you checked the track for dead spots? Do you have any switches in the layout? Also check some of your lighted passenger cars or caboose for a short.

No passenger cars or track shorts. No Switches.

You may not have a short but a dead spot, a dead spot is where you lose power to one of the rails. A short is easy to fin but a dead spot can be difficult to locate.  What track are you using?

Try using a lighted car and see if it's light stays on where your engine stops.

Does this happen with other engines?

Other engines run fine on the layout. This is definitely a problem with the engine itself.

5V boards can just fail like that.  If it is getting power and dead, most likely board is bad.  G

It's a shame that so many of these 5 volt boards seem to fail. Is there anyone who can fix them? ..... Or are they beyond redemption?

I've fixed a grand total of two 5V boards, and I have a box with about forty of them that are dead.  The percentages of fixing them is pretty low.

Depends on the failure.  I have been able to restore some depending on the failure.  Do you have any current draw when power applied? G

Well, typically when they get in for repair, they have a problem, so it's not that surprising.  However, they do appear to fail much more frequently than the 3V boards, and are also much less likely to be repairable.

That's a shame .... is there a good alternative?

You can replace the 5V board with the PS32 board, it has the same connectors and is electrically compatible.  It's mechanically a bit different, so there is some mounting work to be done, and occasionally the form factor makes it difficult to fit where the old 5V board was.

You either use a PS-2 3V board with the 5V black connector housing transferred, and change the speaker to 4 ohm and battery and harness to 2.4V.

Or use the PS-32 with 5V connectors, 4 ohm speaker and remove battery and harness.   G
