I've been wondering for a little while now if the sounds for MTH trains (PS1, PS2 or PS3) are real (recorded from real locomotives) or just general\generic sounds?
This is not a bad thing, I love my MTH trains. I feel some of the older PS1's sound a little better, but still enjoy the new ones just as much.
Not trying to cause a stir with this topic just wondering

The older PS1&2 are generic but they did start with PS2 doing recordings from the real thing. Lionel also did that before. They are both now upgrading their sound systems. Pretty cool stuff.
I'd think the sounds are from real trains but they are not always an exact model match to the real thing. My PS1 Cab forward sounds nothing like my PS2 or PS3 versions. The PS3 Big Boy I have didn't have the best whistle sounds due to it being made before MTH could record the 4014 restoration. However, a quick sound file upload improved that situation.
Some of the newer special runs are real recordings. But not from RR employees. A couple of our club members have their voices in MTH engines.

The original whistle on the 2017 PS/3 Premier Big Boy sounded like a wounded cow, nothing like any train whistle I ever heard! 
I couldn't wait to load a newer sound file. Much better, but the 2014 Lionel Vision Line Big Boy still beats it by a country mile.
