Check the speaker for delamination of the magnet.  The battery, if the AAA green pack, is known to have issues where it won’t maintain a sufficient charge to run the electronics.  Replace it with a BCR2 or a Kruta AAA cordless phone battery pack after you change the connector to match the MTH battery.  If the green 9v, use a BCR or Tenergy low self discharge 200 mAh nimh battery.  Both types should be attached to the battery with either a 2-pin connector or snap connector (9v Style) and to the board with a 2-pin connector.  Sounds on a PS2 board will be low if the battery is low, a BCR is charging or the speaker is bad.

I just purchased a PS2 engine from Trainz at a great price. They mentioned that the battery might need replacement in the listing. I had forgotten that when I put in on the track and it was just a mess. In particular it would not stay in DCS memory and had to be re-added at startup. Frustrated and disappointed I repacked it to send it back. The next day I remembered the battery! I unplugged the battery and plugged in a BCR and that fixed everything. I was surprised though that the dead battery would cause functional problems. I learned my lesson. BCRs from now on.
