I have a PS2 shell from a GP38 which I believe the spring holders are reversed. The headlight does not work when the shell is mounted but it does light up using test clips. I need to defer to the experts and ask which of the spring clips in the photo should contact the headlamp plate on the loco.

It's possible the springs aren't touching the pads on the chassis. Usually removing the spring, stretching it slightly, and reinstalling it works to cure the issue.
Thanks Lou. I tried that twice, to no avail. These don't stay together real well (springs into plugs) and I'm pretty convinced at this point that I switched the connectors under the springs, hence the question.
If it’s an incandescent lamp, polarity doesn’t matter. With an LED they are polarity sensitive. If one LED works and the other doesn’t (but works when tested), compare the color code of the wires on the LEDs and the colors of the wires on the pads. You can swap the wires in the connector that plugs into the spring contacts.
