Greetings,

I have two MTH tinplate engines (see attached photos) and I am wondering the following:

1.  Is it possible to upgrade these from ps2 to ps3

2.  Who can do this work (reliable, experienced, thorough... Just want them to work and keep working)

3. Can I end up with the same sound effects if it is upgraded

4. Am I likely to have more reliable operation with the upgrade?  Presently, both of these engines have issues (i.e. Run for a few minutes and quit, lamps blink instead of staying lit, etc).

I appreciate the help!!

David Morgan,

If I were you I would leave them as P2 Engines, all of mine work perfectly, can't say that about all my P3 engines, especially at very slow speeds.  Guns upgraded one of my 249 Tin Plate engines with ERR, now that is a sweet running and sounding Gun Metal Gray Engine.  I will have to have Guns help me reprogram it into the Legacy Base & Cab2 again, my Legacy is at the Lionel Repair shop as we speak, once again.

If these are PS-2 they can be repaired with PS-32 board with appropriate connectors depending which PS-2 board you have.  Yes you can get the original sound files reloaded in the new boards.

I do this work.

Sounds like you may have a power pick up issue rather than board issue.  Wheels clean, pickups not worn or corroded internally (clean and lubricate them).  Clean track and try them again.  G

George, if they were my locomotives and they have 3V boards, I would keep what I had.  If they have 5 volt boards, it would be an easy decision like you stated to go to a PS-32 board system.

If folks would use MTH item numbers we would know what he has.  I agree with you on track and rollers.   It is hard to blame a board with what he has going on.
