One of the reasons I starting buying Lionel after a long time away from them was that Legacy steam sounds were so much better than PS2. Every PS2 steamer sounded like my Dreyfuss that I bought in 2001.

After watching videos of the new PS3 equipped Blue Goose, it really sounds like MTH has stepped up their game quite a bit with their steam sound sets. The Turbine sounds pretty good too.

They still don't sound as good as Legacy, but they do sound much better. The chuffing has much more body to it. The whistle on the Blue Goose gives me goose bumps (pun intended).

I had hoped their long delay would give them some time to focus on developing richer sound sets. Perhaps this is the case?

The PS-3 technology offers an increase in system memory so it does present an opportunity for MTH to do more with the sounds provided in the locomotives. I thought the3 latest run GP-7 railkings had improved and clearer sound. Horns are differrent on the B&M and the NYC versions, From what you say about the Blue Goose, looks like we can expect some new and improved versions from MTH and that of course is a good thing for O Gaugers.

I like the diesel sound sets in ps3 and the steam sound set from what I heard on you tube is a vast improvement.  Legacy though is still the best. It also seems Lionel seems to do a better job with parts and service. I have both but I am leaning to more lionel until MTH gets their act together especially in the service and parts area. Sorry to say but I think they have spread themselves to thin.

I have a few Proto-3 locomotives including the Blue Goose Hudson and the sound on all three is much richer than the Proto-2 engines. I haven't looked to see what speakers/speaker enclosures are being used which may be a contributing factor. I have a couple of Proto-2 engines with blown speakers and have been looking at the high-performance "super bass" speakers being used in H.O. steam (using two in place of the single low-performance MTH speaker.)

That said, I still think Lionel has the better sound...at least for now.
