Hi All,
I have Googled and Googled and have not found a quality pin vise. Any suggestions? Please provide a brand name and a source?
I prefer one with a swivel head so I won't wear away my fingertips.
Thanks,
Ed

I have a General Hardware Pin Vise, but I can't find one like it when I look. I've had it a very long time, and it has a nice big swivel head that's very comfortable to use. All the ones I see now have a much smaller swivel head, probably not nearly as nice to actually use. This is one that doesn't look bad...
Not hard to beat that price!
The one I have has served me well for years, I just don't find it available anymore.
I found mine on eBay used, obviously not made anymore. eBay: 161915492501
Here's a nice looking one on eBay: 281433491846
I have had mixed results from Micromark. The last pin vise I purchased from them which had the metal swivel top like the one you showed, GRJ, danced like a hula dancer when I used it. Does the General Tools pin vise handle bits from #40 to #80? Does it drill straight or dance like the hula dancer I mentioned? I may try the General Tools one. The second one looks nice but if it is a dud, return shipping, etc will make it an expensive mistake.
Thanks,
Ed
Mine drills straight as a string, I love it! It has four sizes of collets stored in the shaft and handles all the bit sizes. I use it with a wide variety of drill sizes. This is my go-to tool for starting holes in plastic shells, I can precisely locate a starter hole before breaking out the heavy guns.
I liked the look of the brass one, but as you say, what if it's bad. OTOH, if I get something defective from the Far East, they rarely insist that it be sent back.
I picked a couple up like these at the last Greenberg show I went to:

Very good quality, excellent jaws. I have one with the changeable jaws and I was always having issues with it.
I don't recall who the vendor was but he's at every show I've been to.
I just ordered the General Tools #75801. Thanks to all for your help.

Ed
These don't meet his criteria, and I know I wouldn't like using them. The swivel head is key for me when I use the tool. I've had no problem with the interchangeable collets of mine, don't know why they'd be an issue if properly made.
That's the one on my bench that I go to 1st; have another with a fixed head that I use for larger drills. I keep another 4-6 simple ones about when I need to have several drills available for a single project - 1 pin vice simply is not adequate! Changing drills and collets gets old rather fast. If there are a lot of the same size to drill, I have a small rechargeable Dremel-like tool that I'll use or I'll just use my small variable speed drill press.
I think that's the one I have too...as well as several other types.

I have several pin vises including the one Marty pictured and all are dedicated to a single size bit. It does make life easier that way. If the General Tools model is a good one. I will probably get another for general purpose work.
Thanks,
Ed
Gunrunnerjohn,
My General Tools pin vise, #75801, arrived today. Can you tell me how to remove the cap so I can access the other collet?
Thanks,
Ed
