General question not brand specific. I recall some stress around Lionel pre installing a battery in the Century Club GG1.  For those who wanted to keep it mint on display the huge task of removing the battery was a must.   Since then do any modern traditional and higher end Steam or Diesel locos from any of the major manufacturers come with some type of battery pre-installed?  And if so would it be a type that can leak acid after years of non-use?   If this is the case I will need to scramble and remove them from my 1990's/2000-2020's locos.  I hope this is not an issue and no mfgr would pre-install a batter in a costly product that in many cases may not be run for years.   I think on some LionChief products that batteries were provided outside in a box cubbie but I may be imagining that as well.  Thanks for any insight here.

The battery is optional on older Lionel command control equipment. It's primary purpose was to prevent sound dropout during direction changes whe operated conventionally.

I don't think Lionel put batteries in from the factory. That was an option of the purchaser.

Tmmc equipped Atlas engines have the battery option as well, for the same reason as above.

MTH ps1 and ps2, the battery is a necessary part of the electronics. These are factory equipped/installed rechargeable batteries that have a longer service life than disposables and I believe it has been mentioned they are "dry cell" . So they do not leak.

Ps3 equipped locos have capacitors as Alan mentioned above, no battery required.

If there was a previous owner involved, you need to check that there is not a battery installed.    I had a railsound 2 tender that was sold NIB and it looked great, until I opened it and found the leaking battery.   I have found about 10 batteries in the tenders and engines I purchased with a previous owner.  All dead.  I covert everything to the capacitor style 9v replacement battery.

FWIW, I believe 3rd Rail still puts a battery into their TMCC models, so that's something to think about.

For a battery you never have to worry about for TMCC/Legacy, consider the  YLB - RailSounds Battery Replacement.

What exact replacement do you use?  Since the Lionel Railsounds boards have no charger, a simple supercap replacement doesn't work like it does with MTH PS1/PS2.
