i have a engin that is gun metal color and it is chipped up badly. so i am looking for which company makes the closed color i have tried this brand so far scalecoat II gun metal and it seems like it is 4 shades to light. right now i am experimenting with mixing some black in to it to get it darker. any other ideas??

You might visit the paint section of an auto parts store like AutoZone. They have spray cans of paint to match various shades of cars. I've gotten paints very close to what I think you want there before: rather dark metallic gray but not too dark, etc.

You might try one of the outfits that makes paint to match prewar Lionel. Look for "dark gunmetal.' Henning's is one outfit that makes that sort of thing; I don't have the Web site handy but you can google it. Harry Henning occasionally posts on this board.
Another good point about buying paint at Auto Zone or any store is consistency of color. The batches are always very close. If you mix your own paint and run short it is near impossible to duplicate. If you find a color you like at Auto Zone you can stick with it and it will match future paint jobs.
