Yes, these are both old beginner units, no I do not use them often. That being said they are both from when I was a kid and would like to keep the functional if possible. I have recently noticed that they both require a little jiggle of the cord to start "humming". So I'm assuming time for new cords, both are original.

So, can these be opened up? How??

Thanks!

You should be able to open the transformers. What it takes might be some what difficult. I have replaced a cord on an American Flyer transformer(a very low power unit, 30 watts) the other week and it took a bit of muscle to open the bottom of it. If it don't have screws try to put some oil around the base or where it looks like it separates and let sit for 15 minutes and then try to open it.

Jeff,

The transformer handle may have a small screw in the handle that needs to be removed and then the handle comes off. You are correct in taking the nuts off the terminal posts. If it has a small direction button that pushes down leave it in place until you open the transformer, as when putting it back together these will cause problems.

Like POPI mentions try to use a flat tip screw driver to remove the two halfs of the transformer.
