Is there an automatic notification via e-mail or other means when there are new postings on the forum.

Yes, poke around your profile and settings for notifications. You have a variety of choices of what you want to be notified about, inculding mention of you in topics you haven't been to yet, and might not read otherwise.
Notifications can be by email or be available only in your profile. Youd see those as a red dot in the upper left menu w/lines
The red dot happens next to "alerts", I just checked 41 of them.
I’m still trying to figure this out. What I have noticed is when I post something for sale within minutes people are viewing the posting. Are they sitting on the forum 24/7 or is there some way they are getting the notification of the new posting.
Im sure the reason is they want to get informed as soon as there is a new posting if there is a bargain and they get first dibs.
So, how do I get e-mail notifications from the BUY/SELL postings or any other forum.

Open your user profile, scroll down to the Forums group and click in the link indicated below. You can pick individual forums to get notifications from there.
