What's the difference if any between a R4LC TMCC receiver and a R2LC receiver? Doing my first cruise commander upgrade and I just notice a R4LC receiver included.

In the context of the Cruise Commander, not a single thing.
The R4LC is plug compatible with the R2LC, however it has a different upgraded PIC processor, doubtless to add memory for it's use in Legacy applications. However, the ERR units are programmed with the same C08 firmware as the R2LC they replace, and have identical functionality.
The R2LC is no longer produced, so they're transitioned to the R4LC platform, but they're keeping the same functionality as that's what the Cruise Commander is designed for.
Interesting to know, thanks
Lionel still has R2LC that they sell, but I imagine ERR used new production stuff.
If you have or see R4LC with S code that is a Legacy Receiver. G
Lionel is still selling R2LC boards, but I'm sure that's just old stock. I can't imagine there'd be any reason to continue making them and the R4LC since they can just change the firmware of the newer board if they need TMCC compatibility.
I am sure it is. Rumor is they have crates of them. G
One wonders why ERR didn't keep using them until the stock ran out...
2 separate Co, no? G
Well, not really. Lionel uses plenty of the ERR boards in their products, I've seen the Cruise Commander and the Mini Commander 2 boards in Lionel products. I can't see any reason why they'd want to sit on a huge stock of R2LC boards and pay to have new R4LC ones manufactured.
Just some experience...I had an SD40 with pulmor motor that kept stopping every 10 feet. I was advised to replace the r2lc with an r4lc c08. Works fine now.
I suspect that was just a bad R2LC, I've had a number of them that just didn't have the receiver sensitivity that they should have. Replacing them with another R2LC was all that I needed to do.

I think I did swap them first, seems like there was some other issue mentioned. I do have other R2LCs in engines and no issues like the SD40 IC engine. It would run fine and just stop like I had hit the brakes but never lost the tmcc connection. I think then I did a reset and run it for a minute or more, then another stop. Someone, maybe Bill (MTT) told me to get an R4LC.
Odd, I've never heard that advice, and I can't really think of a reason you'd have to do that.
Here's the thread. Jon answered too.

I think they are even though they share tech. I have Lionel TMCC and Legacy motor Driver boards that use ERR cruise but they are slightly different in appearance. I guess Jon can answer, but I would imagine if he is the owner of the company it is a royalty thing and they don't share profit and losses. Plus it is cleaner relationship if he has R4LC made and programmed directly as far as defect items and such. But I am just surmising. G
GGG, Lionel owns ERR, I though you realized that!

Great, I had forgotten that exchange, those gray cells obviously expired.
I've never had that issue, but it's good to know.
No I did not know that. Where is that information posted? I thought Jon owned it. Why would you consolidate in NC but leave an office in CA just to sell upgrade kits? G
It's been mentioned here a number of times, and they appear in every year's Lionel Catalog.
You do know that Jon Z. signs posts with:

CTO, Lionel LLC
Yes, but just because he was hired as CTO doesn't mean he didn't keep his old company. Again, I just assumed that part of him working for them was the License agreement. G

As I stated previously, according to Ken at ERR, they're a wholly owned subsidiary of Lionel LLC.
