For the last week my Railking 0-6-0, 30-1270-1, has been shutting off randomly, but then starts up again automatically.   I run it with DCS, but when it came back on I would have no control of it with the DCS remote such as the speed, sound etc.  I had to shut it down and start the engine back up to again to be able control it with the DCS Remote.  At first I thought it was glitch since it only did it 1 time. However, tonight it shut down again 2 times, but on 2nd time, all I could hear was a loud clicking from the tender when it shutdown automatically.  I tuned the power off, but I heard no single click when trying power it back up.  Since this engine has the older ProtoSounds 2 boards with 5 volts, I assume that the board is shot since the DCS remote can no longer find the engine.  The engine has BCR battery in it and I checked the connection between the tender and engine.  Is my assumption correct that the engine is dead?

Right now I am bummed because this engine just appeared in a photo of the December issue of OGR in the Reader Rails section.  Any suggestions, I would appreciate.  Thanks.

I would remove tender shell and make sure all the connectors are in place firmly and that the voltage regulator is connected (large white connector with 3 wires, red/yel, white.

I would then try it in conventional to see if it starts up.  If not, I would replace the regulator and try again.

Do you have a transformer to read amps as you apply power?

Yes, 5V boards can fail.  If so you need to convert to a PS-2 3V system with newer battery and 4 ohm speaker.  Tight fit in that model, so it requires a unique mounting.  G

Thanks G.  This afternoon I tried the engine in conventional mode and it started up.  I am happy to find out that its probably not the board in the engine!  I then put the engine on different track with different power supply.  I was then able to re-add the engine back into the DCS remote.  I ran it for awhile and did not have any further incidents.  My guess it has something to do with the power supply I was using.  I changed out the power supply and put it back on the same track and it ran fine.  Since the engine was doing it randomly I will have to wait to see if I found the problem.  I have used this power supply without any problems in the past but I guess there could be something wrong with it.
