Hi Joe

Cause could be elsewhere but I would try replacement of the stock speaker with a better one, space allowing. Described here

Have an 02 Silverado, half ton, the sun gear busted 3 times on it. First 2 replacements were at the dealer. On the 3rd replacement an independent transmission guy says GM molded these out of Pasta and installed an after market one. No more problems 120,000 miles later, now have 220,000 miles on it. Do you have a similar experience in your shop?

Dale H
Dale,What trans? 4L60E or 4L80E ?
The 4L60e has a Sun SHELL that strips, not usually the sun GEAR.
When the sun gear is bad, usually the whole geartrain is bad also.
If it's the sun shell, there are a number of aftermarket shells that are stronger to different degree's depending what type of use, from heavy duty truck to drag racing.
On a 4l60E The sun shell can be replaced as a repair. You can replace the shell, check the 3/4 friction, check the 2/4 band, Replace the pump bushing, seal,O ring and gasket.
new filter and pan gasket and off you go,no need to pay for a rebuild,if everything looks in nice shape
Alot of dealer's,but not all, just do replacments
Hi Joe

Dont know the number and maybe it was the sun shell.. It is a 5.3 half ton 4wd Z71 model I bought new. It went once under warranty 8000 miles and 2 times out of warranty around 60,000 and 90,000. I dont think the dealer fixed it right the first 2 times so I went to an independent shop.. The first 2 times the sun whatever stripped as you mentioned and went through the whole transmission causing a lot of damage.

Dale H
It's not that the dealer didn't fix it right,it's just that they either replaced the shell with another factory one,or replaced the unit
Aftermarket part's at a dealership, even improved or heavy duty, is a dirty word in a dealership
Sometime's the shell with strip, and just stop working properly, and not cause any other damage, other times the metal gets into the planets and causes varying degrees of damage, normally the pan will tell you what to expect
I think it's the speaker. I just did a review of a new MTH NW-2 Switcher I just bought. The crew talk is fine but the engine sound are scratchy .Remember these are bass sounds. I Found out in my MTH F-3's they didn't cushion the speaker it was just laying in the speaker pocket a little double sided tape and all was well. I figure this will be the fix for the NW-2

is a 5 Volt system with a 16 ohm speaker. the original speakers go bad and when they do they exhibit the exact symptoms yours does. Replace the speaker and all the sounds will be back to normal. Contact me, MTH or any repair facility if you need the replacement speaker that MTH replaced the originals with.

MTH did not ship their engines with the speaker just laying in the speaker enclosure. There would be 3 - 4 tabs held by screws. If it wasn't that way then someone removed them maybe replacing the speaker. They are a pain to get in as the magnet from the speaker wants to attract them as you are trying to install them.
Joe, I agree with Paul, though on the ones I have replaced the whistle and other sounds were not clear either.

DPC, there also should have been a foam ring on the speaker, then the mounts.

Joe, where in Philly?

Dale, I have a 1990 Z71 and the 4L60E. Transmission went and was replaced with a new one under warranty. Research I did indicated it was an overheating issue from an under designed cooling system. I added an after market cooler and the truck is still going! G

I don't care what MTH doesn't do . First of all I bought them new so no one as you say was in there before. Second there were no holes for screws in the speaker pocket . I guess this is why the 12 year old in china that put the speaker in didn't screw it down . There also was no cushion ring on the face of that speaker it was laying in the pocket just as I said in the first place.

I guess being a repair technician it's always gotta be someone messed with it but it's not always that way

Not true.

I have several F-3's myself and have worked on many and described it as I know it is supposed to be. What is the model number of your engine? Sorry you got one that wasn't made correctly. Gee it's so rewarding when you try to help someone and they spit out such a response as you David. Have a good New Year.

Paul ,
I suggest that in the future you ask a few more questions before assuming that something is a certain way. That's why I made that last comment . Did you ask if I bought them new? No. Did you ask if anyone had ever been inside them? No.
All you said was someone had to mess with them, insinuating that I didn't know what I was talking about.

I agree help is one thing but a comment like yours recieves a comment like mine. If this offends you then I'm sorry that you feel I "spit this out" , but maybe in the future, you'll think about your comments before you post them and the context they'll be received in from someone who didn't buy his first engine yesterday.

David
I apologize if you took my comment the way you did, and sorry that you are stressed out the way you are. Heck I can't for the life of me though fathom how my post could generate this kind of anger....

Chill out there bud. I never said anything like you didn't know what you were talking about, just that MTH doesn't ship engines usually the way you described, and described the way it should have been. I guarantee you won't see me posting any help on this Forum here anymore. Take care, maybe some Prozac, and have a good New Year.
