The owner of Rainy Day Trains in Saco Maine died on Friday June 1st. he was 69 years old. He was a very nice person, and I will miss him. The store will be closed for good. He was originally from Virginia. he always set up in the Purple hall at York.

Sad to hear, Where was he in the purple hall, I do not recall seeing him there?
Eddie,
Yes, sad news and too young. We used to eat at Rapid Ray's in Saco (or is it in Biddeford?) when we visited Biddeford. Is Ray's still there?

Mack,
Rapid Ray's is in Saco. I've lived in this area for 40+ years and I have never been there! I need to get out of the house more and explore some local landmarks.
John Sholtis (Rainy Day Trains) was a super nice all around great guy. When my son Ian was a toddler, he was always welcome to play on the wooden train table that John had set up in the store. Then as Ian got older, John would always power up the Lionel layout when we would come in to visit and shop.
Sad that John is no longer with us.
Mike.
Always sad to lose one of our own. I had met him only once last fall at a TCA organizational meeting.
My condolences to the family.
Hi Mike, we are all too familiar with the number of cranky, old, train store owners who manage to scare children (and adults) away which makes the passing of John that much sadder. He sounds like a kind and generous man who provided many wonderful memories you and your son will cherish.
You really do need to get out! Rapid Ray's has the best lobster roll I have ever had and I have eaten way more than should be legal. Their burgers fries and onion rings are also fantastic. My aunt and uncle used to live in Biddeford Pool and one of the highlights of our visits was the annual pilgrimage to Rapid Rays. I haven't been back for almost 20 years since my aunt and uncle decided to move way,way south to warmer climes..... Cape Cod! They say people on the Cape talk funny and that they can't understand their accents. They don't talk like normal people from down east. Dang southerners!
Regards,
Mack
May his soul rest in peace, up in Heaven and may GOD bless his soul and his loved ones.
