Has anyone modified a metal truss bridge, like one Marx made, to increase clearance at top?  The pantographs on my new GG-1 are too tall to clear top of bridge.  Due to scenery and other considerations, another truss bridge is out of the question unless it's exactly the same length and width with an additional inch or so in height.

I am thinking about cutting the bottom out and adding solid sidewalls to gain increased clearance, but I'm not sure of my skills with metal work.  Since the bridge is all steel, a modified version should look the same.  While it's a Marx bridge (Rock Island name on bridge overhead) and approx C-6 to C-7 condition, I'm not concerned about modifying a post war relic.  These are not exactly super collector items.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The skid is a great option and very prototypical. Also remember in real life the pantographs were rarely fully extended. On my GG1's and other electrics i've lowered my front pans to a more prototypical height with a very fine piece of wire in the center holding them down. A dentist friend gave me some orthodontic wire to use, but a single strand of stranded hook up wire would work as well. Of course, except in freezing rain and sleet the Pennsy ran with only front pans raised.
