Two of my locomotives, a lionel cnj baby trainmaster and an atlas cnj rs1 have both begun to randomly open couplers while pulling a short consist of trainman coaches. The electro couplers are not firing, the coupler just opens on level track running at moderate speed. What trouble shooting should i consider?

You should first consider unplugging the coupler from the electronics and then see if it still happens. This will allow you to determine if it's mechanical or electrical. If it's mechanical, it'll still happen. If it's noise spikes, then it'll stop when you unplug them. For noise spikes, a 1uf 50V non-polarized cap across the coupler connector usually helps. If it's mechanical, I'd replace the coupler.
