Tom,

Please keep us informed on your progress with this project, maybe some photos.

Thanks

Ray

I hope to, Ray. I’ll start a different thread just for my P-7 project. I have most of the detail parts now, still waiting on some. Jay, from Right-O-Way, who was doing some machining on a wheel set for me, has stopped corresponding. I hope all is well with him. Does anybody know if something has happened to him?

I just heard for Ron Bashista at AM that the Reading set only has one extra coach. If you want two, they will have the same number.

Hi Tom, perhaps only some do?  I don't know.  I do know that both my PRR & NYC sets had two extra coaches, but I never really looked that I remember.  This is the first time Ron ever got back to me to ask if I cared.

I believe the Reading did not  have any 80' sleepers and I think the cafe was a 72' car.  There were only 4 road numbers for the cafe car.

Generally, AM has only offered only one extra coach for the 72' heavyweights.  The first run Frisco Meteor had 2 extras.  Don't know about the 2nd run.

I was only able to get one extra coach for my PRR, Lackawanna, NH McGinnis and NH pre-McGinnis heavyweight sets.

Okay, this is getting interesting… I had to look. I could only find 6 PRR heavyweights – 2 coaches both 1237. The NYC set does have 2 extra coaches 2826, 2827. Both boxes labeled ‘Extra Coach’. The other coach is 2825. So I thought, how about the Budd set. The cars are not that accessible, but the boxes are. What I have for Budd boxes is a double box (label toward the wall) and 3 coach boxes; numbers 4004, 4011, and 4013.

So how did the Budd set come? Clearly I’m very wrong about the PRR heavies. The extra coach was the same number back then? They are an older set. The NYC is the re-release we asked for a couple of months ago.

Along with the 4 car sets, the Budds have always had 3 extra coaches available from the beginning.  I purchased all three extras for the sets I own: Burlington, Santa Fe, Texas Special, Union Pacific (Scale,) Atlantic Coast Line and New Haven (HiRail.)  Also bought the 3 available Domes for the Burlington set.

Whether or not AM still has 3 remaining Budd numbers in current stock for a given roadname is a different matter.

Rusty

The boxed Budd sets are four cars. The AM site lists one extra coach as available. In addition the dome cars are available for each set with three different numbers.

It appears at one time AM made two differently numbered extra coaches for the PRR silver set since I have both of them. These were purchased from Dennis Bagby about 10 years ago. I am not sure when he purchased them. I have not seen two differently numbered extra coaches listed on the AM website.

Somewhere in the early advertising for the Budd sets, 3 extra coaches were mentioned.  They were released in 2000.

You either have to call AM for the other extra Budd coaches or indicate "all three extra numbers" on your order form.  Which is what I've done in the past.

As far as the domes go, even though they are listed as a "3 car set," they are individually boxed.

Not everyone bought all three extra coaches, which is why I suspect the domes are listed as either a single car or 3 car set.  At this point in time AM may not have all three extra regular coach numbers for certain roads.

The Reading cars are up on AM's website and are listed as already sold out...

BTO perhaps?

Rusty

No, not BTO because I emailed him yesterday, he told me they were in stock.  I called, ordered and paid after I received his email.  My guess they are not sold out.  I also looked at the AM website this morning and saw the 'Sold Out' sign.  No idea...

Tom, I bought the green NH cars that AM re-ran a few months ago. I also bought three of the NH 80' cars out of his old stock. Interestingly the green paint color is not the same as on the original run. I posted some picture a few months ago. The other difference is the new re-run cars have LED lighting rather than the incandescent lighting previously used. The good news is the LED lighting uses far less current and is flicker free with the size capacitor used on the circuit boards. The bad news is the LED color is a cool white and does not match the original cars.

I already have five sets of AM heavyweights, I do not want or need any more. The only exception will be if Lionel makes a Legacy Hudson or Northern, then I will need to buy a NYC set.
