Reading T-1 sound/upgrade suggestions?

The correct whistle for this engine is actually "hooter". The 2102 did have a steamboat" whistle installed for a while after Andy Muller bought her.

The closest you will get at the moment is from MTH, as they have produced several renditions of the T-1. I would go with them Just for that alone. I am pretty sure you will need to replace the AC motor with a DC can motor and flywheel. George Timko ( I think that's correct) used to do this sort of work.

I used a Timko motor with TAS cruise and an MTH smoke unit. I used the Northern Rail sounds that was available to the after market from TAS.. It runs good, smokes good and has a decent sound with good pulling power (12-15 modern cars)  however, if you are partial to the DCS system then I would go with the latest PS upgrade available. That way you can have synchronized smoke without magnets and reed switches.

during the Iron Horse ramble days only one engine retained the freight whistle. The others were equipped with passenger engine whistles. I have a recording of them during the rambles. I think it was 2102 that carried the freight whistle, at least for a time.

Didn't know RDG Co had different whistles for freight/passenger.  So what exactly does a "hooter" sound like? 

It's a high pitched, single tone whistle. You hear it and you think it should be on some small European machine, not an American built 4-8-4.

While that horn is "correct", the sound sucks!   I heard it on the MTH T1, and it's very unimpressive.

I agree seeing a engine that size with the high single pitch whistle didn't seem to match but that's how they did it.
