I have a Lionel Reading T-1 that I am considering making some upgrades to. ( And yes that will include some magic from Brian Wowak before its done.)  I know if i want to upgrade to PS2/3 I would have to replace the motor with a can motor w/flywheel for the tach pickup to work.

What I am really interested in at the moment though is, what sound system/package/file etc would be appropriate for this engine.  Its basically a 4-8-4 Northern.  I strongly prefer mth systems but I'm not married to them.  The engine as it is now is equipped with old school Sounds of Steam - nice for its day but sounds terrible now, I just turned it off.  The whistle is nice, its a good balance halfway between "low moan" and "northern screamer".  I don't know how prototypical it is because I have not heard a T1 in action.

I've never taken on an upgrade project like this so I'm open to all reasonable ideas.  This machine will be one of my feature loco's once its done so I'm in no hurry - I want to end up with a reliable electronics package and a sound equal to the esteemed appearance of the engine.

looking forward to your feedback.

The correct whistle for this engine is actually "hooter". The 2102 did have a steamboat" whistle installed for a while after Andy Muller bought her.

The closest you will get at the moment is from MTH, as they have produced several renditions of the T-1. I would go with them Just for that alone. I am pretty sure you will need to replace the AC motor with a DC can motor and flywheel. George Timko ( I think that's correct) used to do this sort of work.

Good luck! I hope it turns out well for you!

I used a Timko motor with TAS cruise and an MTH smoke unit. I used the Northern Rail sounds that was available to the after market from TAS.. It runs good, smokes good and has a decent sound with good pulling power (12-15 modern cars)  however, if you are partial to the DCS system then I would go with the latest PS upgrade available. That way you can have synchronized smoke without magnets and reed switches.
