As some of us know, we lost a very good friend, coworker, mentor synonymous
with the Union Pacific Steam program for decades four years ago today. Would anyone
who knew Lynn Nystrom care to share some favorite memories?

I didn't know him but just wanted to express my condolences for your loss.

I only met him once. A coworker from Australia, my wife and I were given a steam shop tour by Lynn. We got a private tour on a Sunday and we realized that Lynn Nystrom had made a special trip in just to show us around. After we signed the insurance waiver we were able to climb on anything we wanted. We climbed into 3985's cab. Saw the 844 and I climbed into 6936's cab. Lynn was very gracious the entire time. I was happy to see that they named one of the support cars after him.
Didn't know him personally, but believe I spoke with him on 2 occasions.
First was in Ossawatomie, KS in June of 2004 when 3985 was heading home on the "In case you missed it the first time" trip. Met him in passing as my Dad, son and I were heading for the souvenir car and he stopped to talk for a few minutes.
Second was in Coffeyville, KS in April of 2010 on the "Valley Eagle" trip. Again my Dad, son and I met him on the way to the souvenir car. Another nice conversation for at least a few minutes.
I believe this may be him in the cab of 844 in a picture I took in Coffeyville that day. Those who knew him better, please inform me if I am in error.

That is indeed Lynn Nystrom seated in the Brakeman's seat, prior to departure. He probably was the Engineer on that move, as I see the Fireman (Ed Dickens) climbing into the cab.
Lynn was a Lionel collector/operator. I was in the process of restoring a set of Lionel Madison type cars at his passing. Finished them and returned them to his wife. Really great guy and was on the UP Steam Team for many years.
I'm so sorry for your loss..
