Just finished going through and refurbishing all my locomotives ( 2 O gauge, 3 O27), rolling stock and most of the animated accessories that have been boxed since 1958. Everything work, mostly. Even about half of the bulbs still work! My question, can the stock bulbs be replaced with modern bulbs of the same size? For example, a NAPA 53-N fits and works perfectly in a bayonet bulb application on many of the locomotives, bumpers and power clips. I don't want to damage anything and they are easy to find and relatively inexpensive.

Almost all of the pre and postwar Lionel products use automotive bulbs and available at places like Napa like you discovered.

Town and Country Hobbies list many applications (and also sells bulbs, including direct replacement LEDs if that is your thing)

Lionel also published a guide in their service manual. Reprints can be found in the LCCA/HSL Digital Archive, the Greenberg and  Aurotech Publications.
