So I am trying to locate a replacement source for the small plastic steps located on the side of the shell on the LIONEL FA units (the late model scale engine with legacy). I have the red MKT units, and also the first gen paint, yellow/red/silver...
Lionel only sells a complete shell...but don't really want to spend $80-100 for just three small pieces of plastic...anybody know another source for this?

If they are molded in, no, they aren't available, but detail parts are, here and there, and can be used/adapted/painted. Try eBay for "steps", "ladders". Scale City Designs has parts - and a website, of course.

Can you post the model # of the FA set in question? From what I see on Lionel's website, some shell details are available for separate sale.

6-81513 is one...but I don't see the steps as a seperate part for sale...it's not a molded in part...it is separately applied...they break off if handled rough...
Also 38182...
Did you try writing to Lionel? I haven't had to ask about an unlisted part in quite a while. At one time they were very good about helping out their customers. Maybe they can help you.

Nope...the steps I'm after are attached to the side of the shell...
If you measure the thickness of the parts, you can fabricate them from sheet styrene. Hobby shop or Plastruct.

If you find some let me know as mine is missing 2 steps when new from Lionel. Was told they had no shells to exchange at the time.
Will do...lionel has shell for this unit, numbered for the non-powered engine...but still don't want to buy a shell just to get the steps. Not that big of a deal...but would be nice to fix them up a bit...
