hi i want to replace my 022 controlers with a smaller less bulky switch also how many switches and controllers can be wired on the b-u post of an old postwar zw ihave 18 switches on the bu after 5 min the breaker trips

Since you usually only throw one switch at a time, I can hardly see how that would trip the breaker. However it might trip due to all the light bulbs being on, You might want to consider replacing the bulbs with a screw or bayonet based LED, available from AutoLumination...

If you have 18 switches with traditional controllers, then you are running 36 light bulbs, so you are drawing a couple hundred watts in lights. How many a ZW will handle is a seems to vary with the particular circuit breaker. One solution is to switch to LED bulbs, which will dramatically cut current draw. Other threads mention where to get these, suggest doing a search.
You can make new controllers with generic push button switches from digikey, Mouser or Radio Shack and LED panel lights.

The O22 controller can be replaced with any single pole double throw toggle switch with momentary on contacts. The ground wire would go to the middle contact on the switch, and the other wires to throw the switch in each direction would be wired to the other contacts. Any switch rated at 120V and 1amp or more would be fine - the key part is having momentary on contacts (meaning the switch returns to the center off position after you stop pushing on it), as you do not want to burn the switch coils out. Most electronics supply vendors have these switches in stock; an example of which is here.

Use a miniature spdt mom toggle switch. Ideal for control panels. The photo below is heavier duty than you need for turnout controller.

You won't burn the coils out on an 022 switch even holding the switch, the coils are not energized after they complete their travel unless you flip the switch the other way. O27 switches are another matter...
I still agree with the momentary on, return-to-center switch, it's just more convenient.
