I've noticed how I see some posts' in the "Recent Posts" box remain in the box for two to three days and other post disappear after 1 hour. Is there a certain time retention period for new post or what determines a post's longevity?

What DaveJfr0 said.
It's essentially a list of the 50 threads that have most recently been responded to, no matter which sub-forum they are part of.
So if there are 200 posts to one thread in a day, it will probably continue to be in the list. A thread with 2-3 posts in a day could be in the list (probably towards the bottom), but it depends how many of the big traffic threads exist above it.

Mars,
A threads activity has always determined the length of time it stay near the top on the OGR forum. Each time a post is made to the thread, it returns to the top of the list, inactive threads disappear quickly from the 1st page of the OGR forum.

As others have said, the recent posts area is driven solely by a thread's popularity. If you reply to a thread and immediately check that list, the thread you just replied to will be at the top. Each new reply puts it back to the top.
If a reply is posted to a thread that is months old and back on page 50, it will go to the top of the list and be back on page 1.
Thanks Everyone for that bit of pertinent information.
