This year's Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting is scheduled for Wednesday November 29, 2017. This great photo of the 2015 Tree Lighting got me thinking. Notice the proximity of Radio City in the upper right corner of the photo.

Yesterday I went against my original plan and added a Department 56 piece to the layout.  Radio City Music Hall from the "Christmas In The City" village was added to the layout in the approximate location that the real Radio City is to Rockefeller Center.

Rock and Radio

I'm pretty happy with the way it looks for now, at least until I can come up with something better.

Always thinking!

Thanks for the extra pictures Chris. Your city model is fantastic.

I remember Rockefeller Center as it was in the late 1940s and 1950s. The Christmas decor was spectacular. Unfortunately today, the Christmas decor has dwindled so much that it is hardly worth a visit.

I am building a second level replica of Rockefeller Center and other famous structures they were in the late 1940s. So far I have the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Flat Iron Building, a lookalike of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. I will be scratch building the ice skating rink, some building fronts and adding the Third Avenue Railway.

Hey Bobby....you're turn! Let's see some photos!!!!!

Hi Chris. My NYC 2nd level layout is in the planning stage, but the rest of my railroad is up and running.

New York City Buildings [11)

This is the future location the 2nd level and my mimic of New York City. It will occupy an area of 6" x 12'. The orangery building on the right is a 3D puzzle of the Empire State Building. Takeoff the tower and the puzzle building looks a run of the mill skyscraper. The Chrysler Building is also a 3D puzzle. The Empire State Building on the left, and the Flat Iron Building are Dept 56.

This view of Rockefeller Center is my goal for the centerpiece of my New York City model because it is how it looked when I was much younger. A golden statue of the Greek Titan Prometheus with an enormous Christmas tree behind him, and the skating rink in the foreground.

Floral Park [1)

The towns on my layout are Floral Park, Northport and Woodside. The El is the Flushing IRT Line, now the #7. All railroad lines through these towns will go to New York City. So far my railroad has about well over 100 feet of track.

So you will be adding a second city level with the skyscrapers? You might want to look for the D56 Chrysler Building and Times Building to go with your Empire State Building and Flat Iron Building. That was what I used on my Christmas Layout back in 2014-15.

That's also the TW Trainworx 100th Anniversary Grand Central Terminal.
