Maybe the coffee hasn't kicked in yet - but I was reading another thread about amp draw and track wiring issues and the suggestion was made: "run your hands slowly around the layout on the tracks to check if any are warm areas on the track indicating a electrical issue"

Has anyone ever modified a freight car with a heat sensor or thermometer? This is akin to the K-Line car that displays the volts applied to the track as it circles the layout.

This could be used to identify "hot spots" on the layout that may need addressing.

Or maybe I'm just needing that second cup of coffee. Your thoughts?

A thermal camera? You could use it for other stuff besides trains.

A co-worker had a thermal camera add on for his smart phone he bought off of eBay, <$100. The top-of-the-line company FLIR has several smart phone add-ons, both iOS and Android. They were sold out last fall but probably in stock now. The FLIR ONE Gen 3 goes for $200 on their site, there's another that is $400. I sold my Fluke VT02 thermal camera when work determined that taking people's temperature hardly worked, and I plan on buying something in the future to replace it.
