Hello, This is my first post here.

I just purchased a Brand New MTH 6200 S-2 Turbine Locomotive and Tender. The unit is Brand New in the Box.

I installed a fresh 8.4v rechargeable battery, oiled it up and gave it a test run today.

My question: Is there any way to lower the volume on the Turbine Sound Only?

All the other sounds are good but the turbine is so loud.

Any help would be great

Brian

This would be a "global" change in volume NOT just the "turbine sound" as Brian is asking about.

I guess we will start from there.

Thanks for the replies.

I will keep you guys posted

If it is a "ProtoSound" a reset will NOT give you a different volume level for the turbine sounds.  Since your train-guy has a Z4000 have him do a Feature 6 at 25%.  Also suggest a Feature 25.

OK. He suggested going back to Factory Settings first. I have tried #6 but that did not lower JUST the turbine, it lowered all the engine sounds.

Here is another thought. When I first took it out of the box and put in on the track it also Chuffed as it moved. My guy says No way. Its a Turbine. I said it Chuffed and he looked at me weird. I know what I heard and he says its impossible. The problem is after I tried to do several Rests on My controller I lost the Chuffing Noises.

I contacted the person I purchased it from and he said he did not add any boards to it when he owned it. I say, Is it possible that this unit came off the line with Turbine and Chugging or Chuffing whatever its called. Its the noise you hear when the wheels start moving and it gets faster and faster as the engine goes faster. I REALLY liked that feature.

I have another ?

I am wondering if I should purchase one of these Z4000 and get rid of my other controllers ?

I have 3 Z-1000 with 100Watt transformers. I am only planning on running 2 tracks at once, with possibly a crossover somewhere.

Whats your opinion on this topic.

BTW...Thank You so much..It helps

Brian, this is why the MTH number would be so helpful.  Now back in the day (2000/2001) I had the RK version 30-1149-1(ProtoSound).  It whoooshed not chuffed. This engine and tender measured about 25/26-inches long.  MTH also made a "Bantam" version that is about 20-inches long.  These used "Loco-Sound" which in fact chuffed NOT Whoosh.

Now if your engine is a true Proto-Sound then #6 will only affect the "engine" noises.  Whistle and Bell will be high IF the volume control pot is turned to the highest setting.

Again the MTH product number sure would be helpful.

The Z4000 is a great power supply.  And if you intend to grow your engine roster to larger engines and/or Premier engines it sure would be nice to have.  But for what you have the three Z1000 are just fine.  But if expansion IS in the future I recommend getting the best power supply sooner rather then later, just personal observation. I never regretted getting my Z4000 early on.

I have to get these Wooshes, and Chuffs down pat.

Thanks so much once again for your kindness and help.

As said the 30-1149-1 is the RK I owned back when and it whooshed big time.  I was very happy with it until I found that Lionel had a scale version that was in fact made by Mike Wolf for them.

Also just an opinion, but I would stay away from used Z4000's and DCS stuff unless I had first hand evidence it is AOK.  Some of the very earliest Z4000's had problems and so with early DCS units.

I have one of the Protosounds turbines, and I put a sound chip from a Premier SP Daylight GS-4, and turned the chuff down using the programming Reset 6 (one clink and one clank). Go into reset 6, one bell will sound, then push the whistle button, the volume for the whoosh/chuff will go down 25% everytime the whistle button is pushed. If you want the protocol from the MTH shop manual, send me an email, I will scan it into my computer and send it to you VIA email as an attachment.

Luke, just curious why change the prototypical turbine whoosh sound to the chuff of a reciprocating piston engine?

well ask MTH on there batham baby S2 why they didnt put in the whoosh in them..maybe some dont like the whoosh sound..whoosh sounds boring to some..

I think most people don't like the turbine sound, and want a chuff, hence the later change.  I personally loved the whoosh when I heard mine for the 1st time.  FYI, feature #6 turns down all engine sounds.  So to answer the OP's question, there is no way to just turn down the whoosh.  You can turn down the master volume (under the tender) or use feature #6 to turn down all the locomotive sounds except the bell and whistle.

Good to hear you like the sound Sinclair. I have the Bantam S2 from an RTR set and the chuff is ok and understandable for an RTR but otherwise it's just technically wrong. I'm getting the PS3 version and am looking forward to hearing the turbine.

Thank you ALL for the much needed info. I always say, "information is Power" so thanks again for all the support. I am hoping to get some good results from my train guru today. He was calling MTH to see if he can take the turbine chip out and install something else on the board, or just take the turbine sound out all together.

You can swap the chip to get different sounds, but as for a custom edited sound set, I'm guessing MTH won't do that.

Scott, When I first heard my S-2, I thought it was messed up, then I remembered that it's a turbine.  I like it because it is different then my other steamers.  I'll be able to pick it out when I have multiple trains running.
