If you know your trains FPS what would be the formula to find O ga scale MPH? EI: Train ran 200' of track in 21 sec is equal to real trains MPH.

It's not the formula, but you might like this: Speed calulator for all scales - http://www.mcr5.org/NMRA/articals/speed.htm
Number of inches traveled in 2.5 seconds equal scale MPH for 'O'.
Once you've learned how to mentally count off seconds on the half-second ("oh-one, oh-two, oh-three..."etc) you can get a 'good enough' estimate.

just use MTH and DCS
Lionel cataloged a pedestrian walkway about a decade ago that measured scale MPH as trains passed under.
If I recall, it worked pretty good.
Joe
It worked VERY GOOD, and was consistent on each loop your Train ran!!

Steve, So we got to Post 3 for the MTH / DCS speed readout comment.
Don't feel bad tho, I was thinking the same thing.
I must admit tho, it's not always exactly correct. Timing the train will be correct to the accuracy level of the time hack.
Neither method is absolutely accurate but they both work well enough for our needs.
1 Mile = 5280 Ft. 1 Hour = 3600 Sec. 1 MPH = 5280/3600 = 1.47 FPS
200' in 21 sec = 9.52 FPS
So that's 9.52/1.47 = 6.5 MPH (if a real train)
48 times faster for O-scale = 312 sMPH (O-scale)
You could get one of these and have a nice project to install and then have something fun to play with after the installation? Hot Shot Speedometer
