Weaver is out of stock of many paint colors due to some mixing issues. This has caused a problem with a custom painting project.

I am painting a GM&O loco using Scalecoat 2 White applied to primered plastic shell. The the last layer needs to be Scalecoat Santa Fe Red. However weaver is out of Santa Fe Red in Scalecoat 2, but they had it in Scalecoat 1. Can I paint Scalecoat 1 over Scalecoat 2? Or will my model spontaneously combust?

Have you tried automotive paints?..Thats what I use on my train projects.

An issue with Scalecoat I was that its solvent can attack (surface etch) some unpainted plastics.  Scalecoat II uses a different solvent. I have sprayed solvent based paint  (Scalecoat I and Floquil) over plastic bodies that were first sprayed with a plastic compatible primer. Scalecoat I over Scalecoat II might work if you have a good base coat and the Scalecoat II is fully cured.  If you can't get an answer from Weaver, why not run a test? When in doubt about compatibility, color, or thinning I test spray the paint on a piece of scrap (usually an empty Coke can). In your case use a piece of  plastic scrap painted with Scalecoat II.  Another "safe" place to test sray paint is on the interior of the car body in question.    If you do a test let us know how it went went.
