Anyone need a mountainous scenery backdrop image? A freebie (image) is always a good thing so if you want it - have at it.

I have seen a lot of questions on the boards (here and elsewhere) this summer relating to backdrops and where to find them, how to make them and that sort of thing. Most that know my layouts also know that I make my own backdrops.

With that said, I was going through some of my files and found one that I never used for my own layouts and thought I would share it with "anyone who wants it". Of course you'd have to have it printed which is honestly very easy.

This one is made from 11 side by side images stitched together to give this view you see. I shot this in the Shenandoah National Forest this past spring. The master image is a regular JPEG image file a little over 17 megabites in file size but when printed to size measures 24" x 60". It is approximately scaled to 1:48. Everything on the bottom just below the tree line is scaled the same so when printed to size it can be mounted to the back of a layout and raised up or down to suit a layout section, module or diorama.

If you want to use it, just save the master jpeg image to your computer and then print or upload to print lab. If you need help, let me know.

Additional info is on the page with the master image. Please remember, this is for your personal non-commercial use. If you use it - cool, if not cool, but do not sell it. If you use it as your backdrop in a magazine or whatever, just credit me for the backdrop art. Joey Ricard! I may have a couple more that I can upload as time allows.

Here is a composite I did to see how it would look when I created it for this module.

And here is a composite I did to check the relation of the backdrop with a shot of the model superimposed. Scale looks pretty good.

You are a class guy, Joey, and extremely talented as both a modeler and photographer (our magazine readers will see some of Joey's work featured in our Feb. 2014 issue).  I saw his offer posted on the Free Rails On30 Model Railroad Forum earlier this evening and hoped he might also post it here.  Thanks much, Joey!

Now if I can only convince him to put together a "How to Create Your Own Custom Backdrop" how-to for the magazine....

Thank you folks and thank you Allan for the kind words. I did make this mini "how I did it" blurb a while back. I would love to do such an article with more in depth detail and I intend to start working on that as soon as I can. Although there are many facets to doing a backdrop from scratch, anyone with intermediate computer skills and a camera can accomplish it.  For now, this is "how I do it"

The forum re-sizes posted images, so you might not be able to read the text, but feel free to download this image if you like. In full size "How I do it". By the way, print in the "how I do it" is exactly the same size and output as the Shenandoah image in my previous post.

Ditto for me as I didn't realize from your post the download was for a limited amount of time so if you do see fit to do it again, it would appreciated if you state when download will expire. Thanks.

Hello folks, I have been traveling for my photography business and have not been able to get online much lately as I have been in remote areas. Also I have been busy working on the backdrops that I will offer.

Terry and Kenn, Although I am no longer offering that particular print for free download, I will offer that particular print at a very reduced price for digital download for you to be able to print yourself if you don't choose to have a print made by me. This will be the only image that I offer for digital download. All others will be available as paper prints and on "Gator Board".

While I am at it, I thought I would  share what I am doing. I am moving along nicely and wanted to share one of my favorite prints that will be offered.

My tree line series will be scale specific and proportionate where the backdrop meets the layout for each particular scale with various sizes, heights, lengths and so on. The catch is that these will be repeating backdrops with the ability to mate sister prints to either side in a seamless fashion to accommodate any length needed. There will also be transition to other series such as mountain to farmland etc.

This one is part of my tree line series and I have it clamped to the mini layout. This particular test print is 24 x 30 and I will use it on a display I am making.

If anyone has any questions, you can email me at on2rails@yahoo.com and I am always looking for input about sizes needed and special projects that I can help you with.

Joey,

First of all...excellent photo work

How do you think your backdrop would work on an area that has approx 12" vertical height then follows the roof contour (approx 45 degrees, forget what the actual roof pitch is but it's close to 12:12)?

Would the trees be too tall and bend at the junction between wall and roof?

My layout room is upstairs and has a 48" high knee wall, the layout is 36" high (that's where the 12" vertical comes into play).

Bob, we can come up with something for that easily. I assume you are talking about an attic style room. I would think that a version where the treetops ended just before the angle and the rest would be clouds. Just leaving it 12 inches tall would be short for our scale. You can feel free to email me and discuss on2rails@yahoo.com and I will be back at my PC tomorrow as I am on a remote right now.
