Here are "historic" photos of the very first scenery on my layout--started a the hardest-to-reach corner:

Pete, the way you have incorporated your post war accessories into a very detailed layout is very cool. Of course, Super O track is IMHO in a different class when it comes to post war. I see in the last shot the beginning of a 456 Coal Ramp, do you have a shot of it in full view?

Mike,

Thanks!  Yeah, my layout is really "about" trying to create a great setting for accessories, in the spirit of the postwar Lionel showroom layouts. The layout has every accessory in the 1957 catalog (except for the silly plastic tunnel) and also my favorites from other years. I try hard to avoid the "long rows of accessories" look that you sometimes see.  (BTW: I have a rule of NEVER modifying an accessory in a non-reversible way--part of the challenge).

Here are some more shots of the coal ramp:

Does the Bascule bridge open and close?

Of course.   ...well, sometimes.

It was actually a real basket-case that I had to completely rebuild. It is a pre-war unit with the pot-metal base that always warped. I only got it to work using a lot of epoxy and permanently attaching it to a plywood base. Not "collector grade" but great for my purposes.

Fantastic!!!!

That Super O track still looks amazing!

So far ahead of its time in 1957. And even today it evokes that feeling of nostalgia yet almost has a  scale look that in some ways beats Gargraves and even Atlas. Just look at the good size of the two rails and how the center blade almost disappears (which is the big feature of ScaleTrax).

By comparison, Atlas & Gargraves's rails are entirely too large for our ) gauge models.

I am so tempted to do my next layout in Super O. I believe the track is available in more radii than originally offered through one of our very own forumites. Although switches seen to be harder to come by.

Go for it! Switches are no problem (except for non-standard radii switches, which is hard). Always available on e-Bay and Mike Spanier (list member and moderator of the Yahoo! Super-O list) can sell you anything Super-O that you need. Speaking of which, consider joining the Super-O list.  It is an intimate list with a great group of folks.
