Hi Lee:
I worked in Power Systems Planning in the same building (L Building?) as AST but leftEast Pittsburghin 1972. I knew many of the AST employees (John Day, Bob Chambers, etc.). Joe Dillard headed that group when I was there. Send me an email off-line if you want to talk about those good, old East Pittsburgh days!
You and Andy asked the same question about running the MTH Schnabel car with a longer load. Since I still have mine apart I’ll concoct some kind of longer load and see what happens. But, as I posted in that other active Schnabel car thread, I have run mine with the transformer load attached on Gargraves flexible track with curves as tight as O56 (56” in diameter). I guess I’ve been lucky but I also don’t have any signals or other structures close enough to the track to present horizontal clearance issues. Chances are MTH uses conservative values on their minimum diameter curve specifications.
However I’m adding a second level with tunnels and bridges and I have used the Schnabel with transformer load attached to determine minimum clearances under the bridges and tunnels. I may need to make them wider if we can come up with a workable generator load!
