Good afternoon all

Looking to add a SD40 Santa Fe (blue and yellow) to my layout. I have my eye on a MTH or Weaver and both state they are sound compatible. I was hoping someone could explain what I would have to do to have sound installed. I have seen both models with sound already installed. I also have a regular Lionel 110 watt ac transformer that runs a nice size horseshoe layout with restored Lionel O Gauge tin plate track. I was also going to up grade to a new MTH transformer to run my new engine.

Now for ps2 and ps3 sounds, do you need to have digital command to activate the sounds of these engines. I think any engine with ps1 sounds can be activated through the horn button on my transformer. I already have a Lionel GP-38 with sound and a MTH 4-8-0 with sound and smoke and I can activate the sounds through the horn button on my ac transformer, any help would be deeply appreciated

          Thanks, Gary

Gary, All Lionel and MTH with sounds can run in conventional with sounds.  The bell and whistle can be activated.  There are more specific sounds that can only be played in command.

I am not sure what sound compatible means.  If a system has Lionel controls inside and is upgradeable, that normally means that command control and command control sounds (RailSounds) can be added via Lionel add on parts.  For MTH a PS-1 bell or whistle only system could be upgrade to QSI sounds back in the day, but that system is obsolete though some parts are still available.

If your buying new or recent MTH it either is PS-2 or PS-3 full command, or a LocoSounds conventional engine with sounds, or in some cases a Basic Reverse Unit model with bell and whistle.   G
