     We have been trying in vain to locate just a tender for Lionel steam engines. There are so many old Lionel steamers out there with out tenders and mores the pity. All of these steamers and no tenders.

     We are now making an asserted effort to come out with a viable Semi-Vandy tender that all can up grade at will. A basic milled steel frame and heavy duty plastic body. The buyers can make any / all modifications ( added items: grab irons, hand rails, etc. ) them selves.

     Anyone interested?

K-Line, who made an oil fired Vanderbilt, and a box tender, both for separate sale, and

the only one to do so, had those.  I want full Vanderbilt tenders in three lengths....the

fuel portion could be interchangeable, between oil and coal, to satisfy all customers.

(Vanderbilts appear to offer less room to stuff in the electronics some want....I could

not care less, but perhaps a longer version would have room for that)

This, I believe, is the full Vanderbilt style - an SP 120-C tender.  I think the 16000 gal tanks were the "Semi-Vanderbilt"

Seaboard had quite a few Vanderbilt tenders and apparently different styles as well.  I'd have to look again but I think they had both coal and oil types.  Most if not all had 4-wheel trucks.

 

I feel mine sits about 1/4" too high, even though looking at some photos it appears to be reasonable.  So far I haven't been able to come up with a fix.

 

I'm not sure if Seaboard and Great Northern shared plans or ideas, but it seems like a lot of their equipment had a similar look, like the front-mounted pumps.

Flying pump, smoke box Elescos, and Vanderbilts were a feature of the C&O's well

known Pacifics and Mikados.  The Seaboard was a surprise to me when I first saw on

here they had many Vanderbilts.  There must be other roads beyond these, the SP and GN, that used them. I'd like to see a list of them posted on here.  Since I've favored them since the C&O, I am trying to provide all my "homeroad" engines on this freelanced layout with them, as a differentiating "styling" quirk.

One sure fire method with these to limit the market, is to limit the road name choice,

except for those of us willing to paint over it.  Usually it is only the small companies

like Weaver and K-Line that have offered unlettered rolling stock, while I ignore much

of what is in the catalogs because of lack of road name choice.  With these, many on

the left coast will want oil fired ones.  I will only buy coal fired ones, unless I see I

can easily modify and "correct" the fuel bunker.  The market needs these, but I don't

know if it will absorb both fuel types.

Is your tender going to be a full scale version or a semi-scale version?

 

I have one Lionel PW locomotive that someone gave me about 10 years ago. I had a local shop go through it and repair anything that was worn out. She runs great but needs a tender. I'm not sure if a scale tender would look right behind this semi-scale locomotive. As for road name if I bought one, either SP or Lionel Lines would do for me. Also do you have a price point yet?

     We are thinking about un-lettered ones with your choice of road name decals furnished with each tender or applied upon purchase.

     Probably be a semi-scale 3R with an interchangeable coal / oil bunker insert.
